In 2012, Norman and Hattie Kielhorn, long-time OOTFA members who loved the organization and the old-time music, bequeathed to the Oregon Oldtime Fiddlers’ Association a very generous legacy donation, directing that the funds be used: (1) to purchase equipment for use at concerts; (2) to conduct music camps for Oregon youth; and (3) to promote the appreciation of “old time fiddle music” among Oregon’s youth.

How the Funds May Be Used
The Kielhorns directed that their gift be used:
- To purchase equipment for use at concerts
- To conduct music camps for Oregon youth
- To promote the appreciation of ‘old time fiddle music’ among Oregon’s youth
General Definitions
- Concerts – a performance of music by players or singers for an audience that does not involve theatrical staging (this is not the same as a jam).
- Promote – further the progress of (something, esp. a cause, venture, or aim); support or actively encourage, to increase public awareness.
- Appreciation – a sensitive awareness, recognition of value.
- Equipment – sound equipment used for live performances such as microphones, amplifiers, speakers, stands, cords, etc.
- Youth – any person 18 years of age and under.
The Endowment Fund
A large portion of this bequest was deposited in the Oregon Community Foundation and established a permanent Endowment Fund. The principal amount of the endowment is not spendable, only the investment earnings. This will establish a long-term legacy for OOTFA and perhaps encourage other members to make a planned gift to continue to expand the fund. Such gifts could be directed donations with noted considerations on how funds would be used.
With the remainder of the Kielhorn funds, the OOTFA Board of Directors established a grant fund administered by the OOTFA Board of Directors. Annual interest from the endowment account shall be added to this grant fund. The Board of Directors’ approval of grant funding is based on the Kielhorn grant application. Submissions and reviews of grant requests can occur at any time.
